Sponsors
The Bali Street Dog
Foundation is fortunate to have some major international animal welfare sponsors that contribute the
bulk of the funds necessary to keep us going. The Foundation would
like to thank the following:
World Society for the Protection of
Animals (WSPA)
Trevor
Wheeler from WSPA's head office in London and people from WSPA's Sydney
office had
heard stories from tourists of the plight of Bali's street dogs but they
were
unaware of any organized effort to help them (So much for our
visibility!!). Eventually in September 1999, they learned of our existence
through Natasha Burton (see below). Then in December, 1999
Trevor came to Bali to see for themselves. During that
visit they saw our work and met with the active foundation members.
Through that meeting we formed a bond that has been our salvation. WSPA, through their Australian office, has funded much of our initial
work. In addition, WSPA sent an experienced veterinarian (Dr. David
Griffiths)
from England to train our veterinarians in a new female sterilization
technique (see 12 February 2000, news story) that has made it possible for us to do large numbers
of female sterilizations for the first time.
In August 2001,
WSPA Australia has funded a special Ubud cleanup project, which allowed us
to spend an entire week working in the Ubud area. This effort was
well received by the locals and a they already are asking for a return
visit.
In November 2001,
WSPA provided the majority of the funding for the Foundation to be able to
purchase a brand new van (see New Van).
This fulfilled a long term dream to be able have our own vehicle instead
of having to beg, borrow or rent transportation every day.
We are forever indebted
to WSPA and their efforts on our behalf.

Bali Street Dog Fund,Australia
Natasha Burton, a Sydney marketing
executive, had visited Bali many times over the years and had always been
horrified by the plight of the dogs. In her words "I
had always been terribly distressed at the condition of the stray animals
who roamed the streets. I seemed to spend half my time running around
trying to feed the starving dogs, but always knowing that my small
offerings didn’t amount to much and once I left they would still be
struggling to survive. Every time I left the island, the images of their
hungry, pleading eyes would haunt me…"
On an August 1999
trip she came across one of the Foundation's street teams and ever since
has been one of our strongest supporters. Upon returning to Sydney
she discussed the situation with her friend, Paula Hodgson, another avid
animal lover, and they formed Bali Street Dog Fund, Australia. They
immediately got a company to donate large billboards advertising our
cause. Next they contacted WSPA's Sydney office, and got support and
funds from them. Paula has written hundreds of letters asking for
support from the pharmaceutical companies, vet associations and food
suppliers. This group has supplied the Foundation supplies.
In addition to funds and goods,
Bali Street Dog Fund, Australia has also organized a "Visiting Vets"
program whereby veterinarians receive limited sponsorship to come to Bali
and help us with our programs (see Visiting Vets)
Thank you Natasha and Paula.
You HAVE made a difference!

International Foundation for
Animal Welfare (IFAW)
The International
Foundation for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is a new supporter of our
foundation. In 2001 they donated money through Natasha
and Paula's Bali Street Dog Fund, for medicines and supplies.
2002 has seen a
significant increase in the support the Foundation has received from IFAW.
In particular, IFAW funded the purchase of a new small van in order that
we can run the Street Program everyday, instead of just one day a week
(see New Van).

Humane Society International
(HSI)
The Humane
Society International (HSI), a division of the large Humane Society of America,
is a new supporter of our foundation. In 2001, HSI donated money to
run field clinics in new areas that we haven't been able to cover before.
In addition they have sponsored the first survey of Bali's dog population.
In April 2002,
HSI sponsored Dr. Listriani and Sherry to a animal welfare conference in
Miami, Florida (HSI Conference) where
they presented the results of the dog survey and well as described
Yudisthira's operations.
In July 2002,
with HSI funding, Yudisthira launched a project to implement humane animal
slaughter (abattoir) practices in Bali (see
Project Launch and Workshop).
