NEW STERILIZATION TECHNIQUE INTRODUCED!

(15 February 2000) Dr. David Griffiths, a consulting vet for the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), visited Bali with Claire Palmer, project director.  During the ten days that they were here, Dr. Griffiths trained nine veterinarians in a minimum evasion surgical sterilization technique using a "spay hook".  He also demonstrated the technique for approximately eight students from the veterinary school at the local university.  Over 35 dogs were spayed during his visit.

The Foundation has always believed that the ultimate solution to Bali's dog problem is an effective sterilization program on female dogs.  Unfortunately, we were not able to implement an effective program because the full uterine removal operation is complex and takes a long recovery period.  Given that the Foundation does not have any holding facilities, such a program was impossible.

During Trevor Wheeler's and Kylie Jones', of WSPA, December 1999 visit, they told us of a new procedure that only involved a small incision and was much simpler.  They then arranged for Dr. Griffiths' visit.

The Foundation is now performing sterilizations as part of its normal street program and for the first time we all feel that we are able to make a long term difference.
